Our Heritage
Discover the history, character and continuing life of one of London’s most iconic churches.
Nearly 1,000 Years of Gathering
Since 1080, St Mary-le-Bow has welcomed people to meet and mark significant life events.
Rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire and home to the famous Bow Bells, St Mary-le-Bow has welcomed people to gather, celebrate and exchange ideas for almost a thousand years. Today, it remains a place where businesses, charities and communities come together, and we'd be delighted to welcome you and your guests.
A Landmark in
London’s Story
The history of St Mary-le-Bow is woven into the identity of London itself.
Its famous Bow Bells gave rise to the tradition that a true Cockney is someone born within their sound. During the Second World War, recordings of the bells were broadcast across Britain by the BBC, becoming a symbol of London's resilience.
Today, the church continues to play an active role in civic life. It is home to the annual service of the Pearly Kings and Queens, hosts businesses, charities and organisations from across the City, and welcomes visitors from around the world.
It is also home to what is believed to be London's longest continuously used meeting room. The crypt has served as a gathering place since 1080, providing almost a millennium of uninterrupted use for meetings, worship and community life.

Supporting the City Community
St Mary-le-Bow remains closely involved in the life of the City, welcoming around 50,000 people each year. Its programme includes concerts, lectures, civic occasions and community gatherings, as well as Pride events, International Women’s Day and interfaith conversations.
We receive no central funding, so every venue booking contributes to the care of the building and to this wider programme of activity.
